What comes to mind when you think of Korea? Perhaps the conflict between North and South, and football fans might immediately think of Guus Hiddink. But Korea is much more than that. Confucianism is woven into all layers of society and culture in a direct and practical way. At the same time, it goes hand in hand with other religions and philosophies, such as shamanism, Protestantism and Buddhism. Koreans like to honour rituals, and sometimes that clashes with modern ideas about how things should be done. Korean culture differs from Dutch culture in many ways, for example in terms of the hierarchical aspect of social relationships, directness, the importance attached to rituals and formality, and group culture. Where possible, this course also addresses these issues in the context of language acquisition.
